Brother “Dominic” O’Sullivan
In 2016, Darcy John O'Sullivan (known as Brother Dominic) was sentenced to a maximum of six years in jail (with a non-parole period of three years) for sexually abusing a dozen boys while he was a teacher at Marist Brothers Hamilton (now St. Francis Xavier’s College) and as a Principal at St Mary's High School in Casino.
Brother Dominic was charged with 22 historic child sex offences which occurred between 1971 and 1983. The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse looked at Brother Dominic’s behaviour in Case Study No. 43 titled - The response of Catholic Church authorities to allegations of child sexual abuse in the Maitland–Newcastle region. The report was the last released by the Royal Commission due to the severity of and the extensive nature of the abuse that occurred in the Diocese. The report can be found here.
Brother Dominic was one of three Marist priests – along with Brother Patrick and Brother Romuald – whose conduct was specifically examined by the Royal Commission within the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle.
Moody Law has represented and is currently representing clients who were victims of child sexual abuse within the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle at various institutions.
