Brother John Dennis Maguire

John Dennis Maguire was born on 13 December 1943 and has spent all his religious career with the Marist Brothers. He worked in schools in New South Wales and Queensland. Between 1978 and the mid-1980s he worked at the prestigious school St Joseph's College, Hunters Hill. The school takes students from Year 7 to Year 12 and Brother Maguire was in charge of 50 boarders who arrived for Year 7. Brother Maguire as a dormitory master had his own bedroom, adjoining the boys' dormitory.

In October 2002, it is reported that Brother Maguire (then aged 58) appeared in the Sydney Local Court, charged with multiple sexual offences against six boys at St. Joseph’s. Brother Maguire was charged with a total 17 counts of assaulting boys aged between 11 and 13 while he was the Year 7 dormitory and form master (in charge of fifty boarders) in the early 1980s. Brother Maguire, with the help of the Marist Brothers, was found not guilty.

In 2014, it is reported that Brother Maguire was charged again at Sydney's Downing Centre District Court with committing acts of indecency against one student at St Joseph’s in 1982 and 1983, when the boy was around 11 and 12 years old. Brother Maguire was approximately 39 or 40 at the time. This time, however, Brother Maguire was found guilty and sentenced to at least one year and nine months' imprisonment and a maximum of three years.

Brother John Dennis Maguire has also spent time in Queensland. He worked at Marist College, Ashgrove and was the principal of Gladstone Catholic High School between 1975-1977 when it was operated by the Marist Brothers. This school was also known for a while as Stella Maris College and it is now known as Chanel College.
