Edmund Rice College Wollongong
Edmund Rice College commenced in 1926 in Crown Lane, Wollongong making it one of the oldest Schools in the Illawarra. The College began as Christian Brothers’ College (CBC). In 1962, the school partially moved to West Wollongong on Mount Keira Road after the College had purchase 9 hectares of land to build a new campus for Years 9 to 12. By 1975 the College completely moved to the West Wollongong campus where the College has remained there to the present day.
The NSW Wood Royal Commission in 1997 and The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in 2017 has identified Edmund Rice College as being involved in multiple incidents of child sexual abuse. Two of main offenders have been Brother John Vincent Roberts who was charged and sentenced in 2016 in the West Wollongong Local Court for abuses that occurred in the late 1980’s, and former Principal, Brother Michael Evans, who committed suicide in 1997 after been questioned by NSW Police over allegations of child sexual abuse at the School.
