Brother Michael Evans

Brother Michael Evans joined the Christian Brothers in 1974. His religious and teaching career was tarnished with allegations of child sexual abuse at two particular schools – St Patrick’s College in Strathfield, Sydney and Edmund Rice College in Wollongong. These allegations include the following:

• In 1979 he sexually assaults a 16-year old student from St Patrick’s College on a football camp. However, the student does not report the incident at the time;

• In 1982 he sexually assaults at 17-year old student at the Presybtery at Edmund Rice College. Again, the student does not report the incident at the time; and

• In 1984 he sexually assaults two brothers at their parent’s house. The brothers do not report the incident.

In 1989, the above incidents were reported to a Catholic Priest, Father M who took the incidents quite seriously and reported them to NSW Police and Bishop Murray of the Diocese of Wollongong. NSW Police at the time declined to prosecute Brother Evans as they were assured by the Deputy Provincial of the Christian Brothers that they were assisting Brother Evans and also providing him with counselling. However, in 1991 further allegations were brought to the attention of the new Provincial, Brother Julian McDonald, who confronted Brother Evans about the allegations and who denied that such incidents ever happened. Consequently, Brother Evans is removed as Principal of Edmund Rice College and in 1994 NSW Police decide to reactivate their investigation on Brother Evans. Before any charges could be laid on Brother Evans, he committed suicide in 1994.
