Brother William Hocking
Brother William (Bill) Hocking was a former head of the Catholic Diocese of Wollongong, a youth counsellor at Edmund Rice College and the manager of a youth refuge known as ‘Eddy’s Place’ also in Wollongong. In 1991, he was questioned by the then New South Wales Provincial for the Christian Brothers, Brother Julian McDonald, concerning allegations of sexual abuse of boys at ‘Eddy’s Place’. At first, Brother Hocking denied the allegations, but later confessed to sexually abusing a boy at the refuge. Information provided by the Christian Brothers Oceania Province to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in 2014, states that in 1992 Brother Hocking was found guilty of aggravated indecent assault of a 14-year-old boy at Eddy’s Place and was sentenced to 150 hours community service. Consequently, he was removed by the Christian Brothers from any ministry dealing with minors.
Moody Law has in the past represented and is still representing clients who were sexually abused by members of the Christian Brothers at various schools and institutions.
