Brother Raymond Foster
Marist Brother Raymond Sidney Foster was born 26 November 1931 and was originally called "Brother Celestine". Through out his religious and teaching career he taught at Catholic schools in Queensland and New South Wales. In 1999, NSW Police interviewed Foster (then aged 67) at a Marist Brothers retirement home in Mittagong, NSW over allegations involving child sexual abuse. He was eventually charged with indecent assaults against boys, committed at Chanel College in Gladstone, Queensland in the 1970s. On 23 March 1999 he was found, hanged, just hours before he was due to appear in a New South Wales court to be extradited to Queensland.
The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Case Study No. 4 - The experiences of four survivors with the Towards Healing process (TheTowards Healing process) - heard from various victims that had been abused by Brother Foster. Astonishing enough, the Royal Commission throughout its hearing found that the Marist Brothers hierarchy had virtually done nothing to prevent Brother Foster from reoffending or to address any allegations made against him. For example, when the Marist Brothers hierarchy had received a complaint about Brother Foster sexually abusing a student in Queensland, he was working as a teacher at St Joseph’s College, Hunters Hill and was allowed to continue to teach there in an unrestricted capacity. Brother Foster was a teacher at St Joseph’s College between 23 November 1991 and 31 August 1994.
Moody Law has in the past represented and is currently representing clients who have been sexually abused by members of the Marist Brothers at various institutions and schools around Australia.
