Brother Hugh “Ossie” McNamara
Brother Hugh “Ossie” McNamara (born 1935) was a former member of the Marist Brothers who taught at the following schools in Queensland and New South Wales:
Marist Brothers College - Ashgrove, Brisbane;
The Southport School - Gold Coast, Queensland; and
St Joseph’s College - Hunters Hill, Sydney.
Brother McNamara was known as Brother “Oswald” McNamara during his time with the Marist Brothers. In 1995, Brother McNamara was charged, convicted and later jailed for indecently dealing with a boy at Marist Brothers College in Ashgrove, Brisbane. Brother McNamara was also known to have sexually assaulted students at St Joseph’s College in Hunters Hill, Sydney during the 1970s. He was convicted in 1999 in Sydney for physical assaulting one such student at the School. It has been alleged that Brother McNamara was dismissed by the Marist Brothers from St Joseph’s. He later went on to become a lay teacher where he taught at the Southport School on the Gold Coast, Queensland. Again, it is known that Brother McNamara continued sexually assaulting students at the school.
