Brother John Patrick O’Brien
Brother John Patrick O'Brien (born on 31 March 1940) was a former member of the Marist Brothers who served/taught within NSW at the following schools:
St Joseph’s College - Hunters Hill, NSW (1968 to 1970);
Marist Brothers College - Hamilton, NSW (1971 to 1981); and
Marist Brothers College - Kogarah, NSW (1981 to 1986).
Royal Commission records from 2016 show that allegations of sexual abuse occurring in 1971 had been made against Brother John Patrick O’Brien when he was a teacher at Marist Brothers College Hamilton. In December 2017, following extensive inquiries, NSW Police through Strike Force Gallagher charged Brother O’Brien with a number of offences against students at St Joseph’s College in Sydney. Brother O’Brien pleaded not-guilty to all charges.
In April 2021, Brother John O’Brien was, however, convicted by a jury in the NSW District Court in Lismore on 11 counts of acts of indecency or attempting to procure act of indecency and seven counts of indecent assault. The convictions were in relation to four students at St Joseph’s College who were boarders at the School and where Brother O’Brien served as boarding master during his time there.
Brother O’Brien was sentenced to seven years and nine months in prison with a non-parole period of five years.
