St Alipius Primary School, Ballarat
St Alipius Primary School was established in 1853 as the thirteenth non-government school formally registered in the state of Victoria. The school is still operating, and it has seen numerous religious orders involved in the running and management of the school. This has included the Christian Brothers who have been heavily involved with the education of the boys at the school.
The School has been identified by the Royal Commission into Institutional Abuse to Child Sexual Abuse as one of the worst institutions involving child sexual abuse. This was especially the case in the early 1970’s where the school employed some of Victoria’s most prolific offenders. This included Brother Gerald Leo Fitzgerald, Brother Edward Dowlan (now Ted Bales), former principal Brother Robert Best and the school’s former chaplain, Gerald Ridsdale. All these individuals are now serving time in prison.
Moody Law has represented in the past clients who were students at this school. We invite former students, teachers and parents to contact us to tell us confidentially what information they may have, and we will explain what options are available to help with these cases.
