Wilson Youth Hospital

The Wilson Youth Hospital in the suburb of Windsor in Brisbane, was an institution run by the Queensland State Government. It opened in 1961 for the purpose of accommodating juvenile offenders, emotionally disturbed children, and children considered  as ‘trouble makers’. The hospital also accommodated many orphans and homeless children. In 1983, it was renamed the Sir Leslie Wilson Youth Centre.

The hospital was established due to the recommendations of the Queensland government’s Dewar Report of 1959. Unfortunately, the Forde Commission of Inquiry into Abuse of Children in Queensland in 1999 found that the hospital completely failed in its objectives to adequately treat, educate and rehabilitate children under its care. The Forde Inquiry indicated many reasons for this and concluded that this unfortunately led to the utter neglect of the children at the hospital and the exposure of many them to physical and sexual abuse by staff who were not properly trained and supervised.
