The Menzies Home for Boys
The Menzies Home for Boys was the new name given in 1943 to the former Minton Boys' Home in Olivers Hill, Frankston - Victoria. The Home was named after James Menzies, the father of future Prime Minister - R.G. Menzies - who became the President’s of the Home’s Committee in 1926. The Home was established to accommodate neglected boys under the age of eighteen who were often wards of the State and placed there by the Victorian Children's Welfare Department. The Home was often referred to as 'The Home on the Hill'. In 1961, the Home changed its name again, becoming The Menzies Home for Children, accommodating both girls and boys and changing its focus from institutionalised care towards providing accommodation around family group homes in both Frankston and Dandenong areas. Finally, in 2000 the organisation become known as the Menzies Inc.
The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse heard from former residents of the Home who made allegations and reported incidents of sexual abuse involving older boys sexually abusing younger boys in the dormitories. Further, allegations have been made of former residents being sexually abused by officers/carers of the Home.
Moody Law is currently representing a client who has made allegations of being sexually abused while he was placed at Menzies Boys’ Home as a ward of the State of Victoria.
