St Mary’s Cathedral College
St Mary’s Cathedral College (SMCC) is a single sex school for boys, located near Hyde Park in Sydney, New South Wales. The school was founded in 1824, making it the oldest Catholic school in Australia. At present, it caters for approximately 770 students from Year 3 to Year 12. The College is managed by the Archdiocese of Sydney through its Sydney Catholic Schools administration. The school is attached to St Mary’s Cathedral and is under the responsibility of the Congregation of Christian Brothers.
Like many other Christian Brothers’ schools around Australia, the school has been involved recently in allegations of child sexual abuse. Allegations have been against one of its former lay teachers, Brian Mills, in relation to sexually and physically abusing a student in the late 1960s. Allegations of extreme physical abuse have also been made against Brother Richards, who was a former Headmaster of the primary school at St Mary’s around the same time. The school has also been associated with a former principal of the school, Brother William David Standen, who was principal of the school between 2000 and 2010. Brother Standen pleaded guilty to seven charges of indecent assault against seven teenage boys when he was Year 7 dormitory master at St Patrick’s College in Goulburn, NSW, between 1978 and 1981.
Moody Law has represented clients in the past who have made allegations of sexual and physical abuse against Brian Mills and against members of the Christian Brothers at numerous other schools.
We invite former students, past teachers, and parents to tell us confidentially what information they may have, and we will explain what options are available to help with these cases.
