Michael Stanton (Brother Jeffrey)

Michael Stanton was a former member of the Patrician Brothers who mainly served/taught in New South Wales. NSW Supreme Court records indicate that Brother Jeffrey was born in 1955 and completed his HSC (Year 12) at Holy Cross College (a Patrician Brothers school) in Ryde in north-western Sydney. Following high school, Brother Jeffrey obtained a teaching degree and in 1976 was professed as a Brother of the Patrician Brothers where he became known as Brother Jeffrey. It is reported that Brother Jeffrey taught/served at the following institutions:

  • St Michael’s Regional High School - Wagga Wagga, NSW (approximately late 1970s);

  • Patrician Brothers College - Blacktown, NSW (early 1980s); and

  • Patrician Brothers College (now known as Delany Catholic College) - Granville, NSW (approximately 1982 to 1990).

It is also reported that Brother Jeffrey taught high school and adult students in Kenya, Africa between 1990 to 1994.

In February 2016, Brother Jeffrey (who was aged 60 at the time) was arrested by NSW Police through Strike Force Avia (created to investigate allegations of sexual abuse at Patrician Brothers Blacktown and at St Bernadette’s Primary School) on child sexual abuse offences. He was subsequently found guilty and sentenced in Parramatta District Court to 23 years in prison for sexual offences committed against three victims in 1980 and 1981 at Patrician Brothers College Blacktown. Brother Jeffrey was jailed in relation to 19 charges, including 13 counts of indecently assaulting a male and two counts of buggery. It is alleged that the offences occurred when Brother Jeffrey was 25 or 26 years old at the time. NSW Court records also indicate that school authorities removed Brother Jeffrey from the School around 1981 when they obtained knowledge of his actions and simply transferred him to another school without reporting his actions to NSW Police.

Brother Jeffrey will have to serve a minimum of 13 years and nine months, and will be eligible for parole in September 2029.
