Martin James Cooper
Martin James Cooper was a cottage parent who ran Warminda Cottage/Warminda Hostel in East Victoria Park in Perth, Western Australia. He and his wife, Nancy, ran the hostel from 1978 to 1983. Warminda Cottage was owned by the State of Western Australia and operated by the Uniting Church. The Cottage looked after state wards who could or would not be cared by their families.
Following submissions made to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse and one victim requesting a police investigation, Martin Cooper was charged in 2016 by Western Australia Police and was extradited to Perth from NSW. Martin Cooper was tried in Perth District Court in 2018 and even though he pleaded not guilty to 43 historic child sex offences, he was found guilty by a jury of 30 offences against four boys and four girls aged between 11 and 16. He was consequently sentenced to 20 years in prison and will be eligible for parole in 2036.
Moody Law has recently represented a client who has made allegations of sexual and physical abuse against Martin Cooper while he was placed at Warminda Cottage/Warminda Hostel.
