Marist College Canberra (Pearce)

Marist College Canberra is an independent Roman Catholic primary and secondary day school for boys, founded in 1968 by the Marist Brothers. Since its establishment, the College has developed into one of the largest schools in the ACT. It has also developed into one of the most highly regarded and sought-after schools in ACT. For the first 47 years of the school’s life, most of the teachers at Marist College were Brothers. In 2015, this changed when the last of the Brothers were farewelled and replaced by lay people continuing on with the educational values and structure of the Marist Brothers.

The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, however, has found Marist College Canberra to be the one of the worst institutions for claims of child abuse in the Catholic Church educational system. The Royal Commission has identified 63 claims of child sexual abuse against the school. It is reported that the known offender, Brother Kostka Chute, taught and lived at the school between 1976 and 1993. During the Royal Commission it was held that 19 boys had told the Marist Brothers that Brother Chute had sexually abused them while they were students there. Brother Chute was subsequently convicted of offence in relation to five of those boys.
