Marist Catholic College Kogarah
Marist Catholic College Kogarah is a independent Roman Catholic day school for boys which was founded in 1909. The College caters for students from Year 7 to Year 12 and has an approximate current enrolment of 1,200 students. The College is located in the suburb of Bexley, in southern Sydney.
The College has been reported and involved in allegations of sexual abuse by past members of its teaching staff. This includes the following:
Brother Christopher (former principal and real name William Henry Wade) - was found guilty in 2017 in the NSW District Court on two counts of indecently assaulting a 13-year-old student at the College in 1980 (plus the sexual abuse of another student at St Joseph’s College). He was sentenced to 18 months in prison. In 2020, Brother Christopher was further charged under section 316 of the Crimes Act 1900 (NSW) which made it an offence to conceal information a serious indictable offence, punishable by up to two years in jail after he admitted to failing to provide information to NSW Police during a 2014 investigation into abuse at Marist schools in the 1970s;
Brother John O’Brien - was charged and convicted with 13 offences against four students at another school - St Joseph’s College, Hunters Hill - after allegations were raised at the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in 2016. Brother John O’Brien was also a former headmaster at Marist College in Kogarah.
Moody Law has in the past and is still representing clients who have made allegations of sexual and physical abuse against members of the Marist Brothers at various schools and institutions around Australia.
