Joseph William Weygood
Joseph William Weygood ( b. 1943) is a former Marist Brother and lay teacher who predominantly taught in Victoria and South Australia. Online records maintain that Mr Weygood began training in Victoria as a Marist Brother when he 17 years old in 1960. He initially chose the religious name of “Brother Cyril”, changing it later to “Brother Joseph”. Whilst in South Australia, Court records indicate that he taught at the following schools:
St Joseph’s College - Mitchell Park (now Sacred Heart College); and
Blackfriars Priory School - Prospect (lay teacher)
In 2020, Mr Weygood was accused and charged with three counts of indecently assaulting a male student at St Joseph’s College between 1968 and 1970. Mr Weygood was found not guilty based on the evidence in which the Judge could not find the accused guilty as he was short of the certainty required for a conviction. This was in particular due to three factors:
The difficulty of remembering events that occurred over 50 years ago, which events are alleged to have taken only a matter of seconds;
The difficulty in obtaining details of an incident at Broken Hill and the absence of potential witnesses who may have been available to assist the case of the accused; and
The difficulty for the accused in defending charges when the dates of those charges are vague, such vagueness in the actual dates is clearly exacerbated by the length of time that has elapsed.
Moody law is currently representing a client who has made allegations of sexual against Mr. Weygood when he was a lay teacher at Blackfriars Priory School.
