Gippsland Grammar School, Sale

Gippsland Grammar School is an independent, Anglican, co-educational, day and boarding school in Sale, Victoria. The school has three main campuses - the St Anne's Campus (K-6), the Garnsey Campus (7-12) and the Bairnsdale Campus (K-6). The School originally started in 1924 as St Anne's Church of England Girls School, with Gippsland Grammar School for boys commencing in 1961. In 1971, the two schools amalgamated as St. Anne's and Gippsland Grammar School  This lasted until 1997 when the school officially became to be known as just Gippsland Grammar School.

The school has been linked to various allegations of child sexual abuse, in particular to those involving Phillip Douglas Hazeldine (aged 72). Mr. Hazeldine was employed by Gippsland Grammar's at St Anne's Campus in Sale as a special education teacher between 1971 and 1987. Since 1997, Mr Hazeldine has been charged and sentenced over the following offences:

  • In 1998, he was sentenced for a minimum of 12 months for offences committed against students at the St Anne's campus in the late 1970s and 1980s;

  • In 2003, he was sentenced to two years and 11 months' jail, wholly suspended for sexually abusing another six victims; and

  • In 2019, sentenced to 12 months' prison, wholly suspended, for sexually assaulting a boy on a week-long school excursion.

Moody Law is currently acting for a survivor of sexual abuse by Phillip Douglas Hazeldine who was sexually abused as a student at Gippsland Grammar School in Sale.
