Brother Majella Fitzpatrick
Lawrence Fitzpatrick was a member of the Marist Brothers who went by the religious name of Brother “Majella” Fitzpatrick. He was born on 18 September 1927. It is reported that Brother Majella Fitzpatrick had been charged and convicted of 38 counts of sexual abuse, and accused of more than 90 charges of indecent assault.
Brother Majella worked at a number of Marist Brothers schools, including the Marist Brother run boys-only boarding school St Patrick’s College, Sale in eastern Victoria. The school is now known as Catholic College Sale after it merged with a Our Lady of Sion College in 1977.
In 2014, the SANO Taskforce of Victoria Police investigated the complaints of sexual abuse by former students of St Patrick’s College, Sale. Subsequently, Brother Majella Fitzpatrick was charged by Victoria Police and appeared at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court in 2017 charged with 99 historical child sex offences in relation to his time at St. Patrick’s College in Sale.
Brother Majella was also the head of the primary school at Marcellin College, Melbourne in 1979 to 1980.
