Father Tony Caruana

Father Anthony (“Tony”) Caruana is a member of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart who in 2019 was charged with numerous charges involving decently assaulting a number of boys, aged 12 to 15, in the 1980s when he was on the staff of Chevalier College, Burradoo (near Bowral) in the NSW Southern Highlands. Chevalier College is a Catholic school established by the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. Father Caruana was a band teacher, rugby coach and manager of a dormitory at the School.

NSW Police initially arrested Father Anthony Caruana at his Kensington home and charged him with sexual assault, indecent assault and committing an act of gross indecency on the complainants at Chevalier College between 1982 and 1988. He was granted bail, pending his next court appearances. However, in late 2019, following further investigations by NSW Police, Father Caruana was re-arrested at Southern Highlands Police Station on 1 October 2019. He was charged with an additional 18 offences (four sexual assault offences, 12 indecent assault offences, and two offences of gross indecency committed by a male). In 2020, while the matter had its next mention in Moss Vale Local Court (west of Wollongong) the Court was told that Father Caruana was being hit with 13 additional charges – bringing the total number of child sex offences to 43.

Father Caruana’s arrest came as a result of Strike Force Caber, which was established in July 2018 to investigate allegations of child sexual abuse at Chevalier College in the 1980s.
