Father Peter Brock

Father Peter Julian Brock was born on 18 September 1945 and died 11 September 2014. He was ordained as a priest in the late 1960s for the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle. The Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle was heavily scrutinised by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse and it concluded in Case Study No. 43 that it was one of the worst dioceses in Australia in regard to the level of sexual abuse committed there. Father Brock was one of those priests (among many others) who committed various acts of sexual abuse on boys in the Diocese.

In 2007, the NSW Police Force conducted ‘Strike Force Georgiana’ which looked into the behaviour of many religious brethren, including Father Brock. Subsequently, Father Brock was charged in 2008 with 22 offences involving child sexual abuse against two boys. The charges, however, were later withdrawn by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in 2009 at a committal hearing. Subsequently, the Catholic Church as required by state-law in NSW, had to conduct an internal investigation on Father Brock for the State Ombudsman, which stated that between approximately 1968 and 1975 whilst Father Brock was an assistant priest and priest within the diocese of Maitland-Newcastle, had engaged in a range and pattern of behaviour with and/or towards two boys at the time. Knowing this, the Church felt the need to elevate Father Brock to an important role in 2010.
