Father Nazareno Fasciale

Nazareno Fasciale was born in Delianuova, Calabria, in southern Italy, on 30 December 1926 and died in 1996. He migrated to Australia along with his parents when he was nine years old and grew up in North Melbourne. He trained as a priest for the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne in the late 1940s and early '50s. Father Fasciale was ordained as a priest in 1952 and served in the Archdiocese of Melbourne for most of his religious life. During his service in the Archdiocese, the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, found that 20 people had made a claim of child sexual abuse for alleged incidents occurring in the period from 1953 to 1985. Most of the claimants (78%) were under the age of 13 years at the time of the alleged sexual abuse and 22% were 13 years or older. Father Fasciale first allegation against him occurred in 1953, one year after his ordination, when he was only 27 years old. For all the complaints that were made against Father Fasciale, he was never charged by Victoria Police and was never laicised by the Catholic Church.
