Father Lloyd Reynolds

Father Lloyd Reynolds was born in 1917 in Young, NSW and died in 1983. He was ordained as a priest in 1943 for the Catholic Archdiocese of Goulburn-Canberra and went on to serve at the following parishes:

  • Ungarie, NSW;

  • Goulburn, NSW;

  • Crookwell, NSW;

  • Queanbeyan, NSW;

  • Moruya, NSW;

  • O’Connor, ACT; and

  • Aranda, ACT.

ACT court records show that in 2006, Bishop Patrick Power of the Catholic Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn, settled an agreement with a victim of Father Reynolds who allegedly abused him between 80 to 100 times in the 1960s. The agreement included a settlement of $100,000. In 2024, the ACT Supreme Court set aside this settlement and allowed the Plaintiff/victim to pursue further recourse due to the following factors:

  • the Plaintiff suffered from dyslexia, had poor reading skills and writing abilities;

  • the Plaintiff was not legally represented before he signed the Release and received no advice as to the potential quantum of his claim;

  • the Plaintiff had no independent legal advice about the document and no one, including a lawyer, explained the contents of the Release to the Plaintiff before he signed it;

  • it was inferred by the Court, that Bishop Power took advantage of the Plaintiff’s lack of education and that there was a substantial inequality of bargaining power at the time of the negotiation and signing of the Release; and

  • that the only so-called ‘solicitor’ in the room, was often having private discussions with the Bishop and never discussed the content of those discussions with the Plaintiff, thus indicating a class of interest between the Plaintiff and the ‘solicitor’.

Moody Law has in the past and is still representing clients who have made allegations of sexual and physical abuse against numerous Dioceses around Australia.
