Father Finian Egan
Father Finian Egan was a parish priest who worked/served most of his religious time in parishes within Greater Sydney. Father Egan was born in November 1934 in Ireland and came to Australia in 1959. He retired as a parish priest in 2000 and was dismissed as a cleric in 2018. During his service with the Catholic Church in NSW, he served at the following parishes/institutions:
St Columba's parish, Leichhardt North (Assistant Priest);
St Martha's Industrial Home (for disadvantaged girls), Leichhardt (frequent visitor);
St Aloysius parish, Cronulla;
Our Lady of the Rosary parish, Fairfield;
Our Lady of the Rosary parish, The Entrance (Central Coast of NSW);
St Joseph's parish, Narrabeen (Northern Beaches of Sydney);
St Gerard Majella parish, Carlingford (Parish Priest between 1978 to 1999. He was heavily involved with the parish’s “Antioch” youth group); and
Diocese of Broken Bay (comprising Sydney's northern suburbs).
In 2012, Father Egan was charged by NSW Police with eight counts of sexual offences against minors, committed between 1961 and 1987 during his time as an ordained priest. The offences included the following:
one count of rape;
three counts of indecent assault on a child under the age of 16; and
four counts of indecent assault.
NSW court records indicate that Father Egan pleaded not guilty to the charges and was subsequently tried in the District Court of New South Wales. He was found guilty of the offences by a jury and on 20 December 2013 he was sentenced to a term of eight years imprisonment with a non-parole period of four years.
