Father David Rankin

Father David Rankin (real name Gregory David Rankin) was a member of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) who joined the Order in 1970 and was ordained as a priest in 1975. As a school boy he attended St Aloysius College in Milsons Point, Sydney - one of the prominent Jesuit schools in Australia. Father Rankin was a lay teacher at Northbridge Primary School in Sydney before becoming a priest. As a priest he served at the following locations:

• Immaculate Conception Parish, Melbourne;

• Catholic chaplain at the University of Tasmania in Hobart; and

• Diocese of London, in the province of Ontario, Canada.

Father Rankin was removed from the Jesuits after the Order had learned of charges had been laid against him when he was arrested in August 2012. In 2014, Father Rankin (aged 79 at the time) appeared in the NSW District Court were he pleaded guilty to 11 acts of indecency on three boys in the 1960s when he was a lay teacher at Northbridge Primary School. Subsequently, Father Ranking was given an 18 months jail sentence, with 12 months behind bars before he could apply for parole for the final six months.
