Errol Swain

Mr Errol Swain was a former lay teacher who taught religious studies in primary school. He died in 1985. NSW Supreme Court records indicate that Mr Swain taught at the following De La Salle Brothers schools:

It is reported all students were afraid of Mr. Swain as he was regarded as a tough teacher who would cane students even for minor transgressions. For example, students would be hit with the strap simply for getting a quiz question wrong.

Allegations of sexual abuse have been made against Mr Swain in the past. A recent NSW Supreme Court decision has indicated that the De La Salle Brothers - in particular Brother Julian who was the Principal of De La Salle College Bankstown and Brother Michael who was the Provincial of the De La Salle Brothers - knew of Mr Swain’s behaviour going back to the 1960s after an investigation had been done by the Order. It is indicated that the De La Salle Brothers failed to report Mr. Swain’s behaviour to the appropriate authorities and instead dismissed any complaints made against him. It is further alleged that the Order even communicated that Mr. Swain would not be dismissed from his position at De La Salle College Bankstown so that they could keep an eye on him and assured those who had made complaints against him that he would undergo treatment.

Moody Law has in the past and is still representing clients who have made allegations of sexual and physical abuse against members of the De La Salle Brothers at various schools and institutions around Australia.
