Christiaan John Beullens
NSW District Court records report that Mr Christiaan John Beullens was a former instructor/youth worker who worked at Daruk Training School for Boys in South Windsor, NSW between 28 December 1970 until approximately 1981. During his time at Daruk, Mr Beullens was aged in his mid to late 20s. Mr Beullens also resided at Daruk in the bachelor’s quarters during his employment there.
Daruk Training School was established in 1960 by the NSW Department of Community Services for juvenile offenders as an annex to Mount Penang Training School for Boys in Gosford on the Central Coast of NSW. The School closed in early 1985. It was run with strict discipline based on military guidelines. It is reported that youth workers such as Mr Beullens were responsible for the direct supervision of inmates and had considerable power over them, dictating and determining their access to privileges and official punishments, such as isolated detention. Furthermore, it also reported that there existed a culture of physical abuse at Daruk of which Mr Beullens was a part of, even though it was against departmental regulations to physically punish inmates.
NSW District Court records further report that Mr Beullens was arrested on 17 April 2018 over allegations of sexual offences committed against four former inmates of Daruk during the 1970s. On 16 March 2022, Mr Beullens was found guilty by a jury upon seven charges of indecent assault and buggery and was sentenced to 13 years in prison, with a non-parole period of eight years. Mr Beullens will become eligible to be released on parole on 15 March 2030.
