Brother Ronald Justin Lasik

Brother Ronald Lasik (born 1931 and died 2021) was a former member of the Christian Brothers who served in the United States of America, Canada and Australia. It is reported that Brother Lasik served at the following schools/institutions throughout his teaching/religious career:

  • St Gabriel’s Catholic Church - New York, NY (1950);

  • St Bonaventure College - St John’s, Newfoundland, Canada (1950 to 1954);

  • Mount Cashel Orphanage - St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada (1954 to 1957);

  • St Laurence High School - Chicago, Illinois, USA (1968)

  • Clairvaux Christian Brothers College - Upper Mt Gravatt, Queensland, Australia (approximately early to mid 1970s);

  • St Brendan’s College - Yeppoon, Queensland, Australia (approximately late 1970s);

  • Congregation of Christian Brothers - Laveen, Arizona, USA (1988);

  • Seton Catholic High School - Chandler, Arizona, USA (1989);

  • Edmund Rice Community (Congregation of Christian Brothers ) - Chandler, Arizona, USA (1994 - 1995);

  • Congregation of Christian Brothers, West Park , New York, USA - (2004 to 2017).

Court records from the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador indicate that Brother Lasik taught at Mount Cashel Orphanage between 1954 to 1957 where he taught primarily Grades 7 and 8 and the School’s tumbling team. Brother Lasik was also responsible for the middle dormitory consisting of approximately 40 to 50 boys, and other general responsibilities. In 1999, Brother Lasik was convicted by a Canadian jury of sexually abusing six boys at Mount Cashel. The convictions included six counts of indecent assault; six counts of buggery; two counts of gross indecency; and five counts of common assault. He was sentenced to 10 and a half years in prison at the age of 68. However, in 2003 he was released on good behaviour and deported to the United States of America.

In 2013, further allegations were made against Brother Lasik of sexually abusing two boys at St Laurence High School in Chicago, Illinois. Brother Lasik was principal at St Laurence starting in 1966 but apparently vanished from the School midway through the school year in 1967-1968 without any announcement being made of his disappearance by the Christian Brothers. By the early 1970s, information brought forward might indicate that the Christian Brothers transferred Brother Lasik to Australia to cover up his actions in North America.
