Brother Phillip David Slattery
Phillip David Slattery was a former Marist Brother who was known as Brother Phillip. NSW District Court records indicate that Brother Phillip was born on 10 February 1948 and that he grew up in a strict religious home of seven children. At the age of 14, Brother Phillip entered the Marist Brothers, relocating to Mittagong in the southern highlands of NSW to do his School Leaving Certificate. Afterwards, Brother Phillips undertook study in religious teachings and completed teacher training. Once a qualified teacher, Brother Phillip went on to teach in the Catholic Education System as a teacher and principal for approximately 30 years. Afterwards, Brother Phillip became a school inspector in the Catholic Education Office for 11 years before being retrenched.
In 1986, Brother Phillip became the foundation Principal of Mary Immaculate Catholic Parish Primary School in Eagle Vale in south-western Sydney. He remained Principal of the School until the end of 1992. Whilst working at St Mary’s, he would reside at St Gregory’s College Campbelltown in the neighboring suburb of Gregory Hills.
In 2016, New South Wales Police charged Phillip Slattery after interviewing two of his former students of Mary Immaculate. The charges comprised a total of four incidents of indecent assault against these two children. Slattery went on to plead guilty in the NSW District Court in 2017 and was given an aggregate sentence of 3 years and 10 months imprisonment comprising a non-parole period of 2 years and 4 months from 18 December 2017 to 17 April 2020 and an additional term of 1 year and 6 months from 18 April 2020 to 17 October 2020 during which the offender is eligible to be released on parole.
On 2 February 2018, the Marist Brothers Provincial Office apoligised to those who had suffered any abuse by Brother Phillip.
