Brother Paul Smith
Brother Paul Smith is a member of the De La Salle Brothers who throughout his service with the Order, has been predominantly involved in the management and supervision of certain institutions and schools throughout Australia. One particular institution was BoysTown in Beaudesert, Queensland. BoysTown operated in the form of a residential school for boys aged between 12 and 16 in seven cottages between 1961 to 2001, in which Brother Paul Smith was its Principal Director between 1982 to 1992. Allegations of physical abuse by Brother Paul Smith have been made by former students of Boystown, including also that he saw other Brothers committing sexual abuse at BoysTown and that incidents of sexual abuse were reported to him and that he failed to act on those allegations.
BoysTown was well known institution in Queensland and it was revealed by the Royal Commission that BoysTown was subject to more claims of child sexual abuse than any other institution in the Catholic Church claims data for Australia. The 219 claims of child sexual abuse that related to BoysTown represented 67 per cent of all the claims of child sexual abuse received by the De La Salle Brothers. Of the people who alleged child sexual abuse at BoysTown, 191 also alleged that they were physically abused.
