Brother Martin Harmata
Brother Martin Harmata (born 1953) was a former member of the Patrician Brothers who taught science mathematics, and sex education for Years 7 to 10 at Patrician Brothers Blacktown in western Sydney for approximately 31 years. He began his novitiate in 1974 and finally professed his vows in December 1982. It is reported that in 2012, Brother Martin was stood down by the School after allegations were made that he had sexually abused two boys - aged 12 and 13 - at the School during the 1980s. In November 2012, he was arrested by NSW Police through Strike Force Avia (created to investigate allegations of sexual abuse at Patrician Brothers Blacktown and at St Bernadette’s Primary School) and charged with six offences, which included the indecent assault of a person under his authority and committing an indecent act towards a person under his authority. After NSW Police gathered more information and allegations on Brother Martin, in June 2013, Brother Martin pleaded guilty in the Parramatta District Court to eight child-sex offences committed against three boys who were under his authority during the late 1980s. In September 2013, Brother Martin Harmata was sentenced to an aggregate term of imprisonment of seven years, with a non-parole period of three years six months, expiring on 10 January 2017 and with his full sentence expiring 10 July 2020.
