Brother John Skehan

Brother John Skehan was born in 1939. In the 1950s, Brother Skehan trained with the Marist Brothers at Macedon in Melbourne. Throughout his service with the Marist Brothers, he was known by different names such as Brother Emilian John Skehan and Brother John. It is known that Brother Skehan taught at various Marist Brothers schools in Broken Hill, NSW and in Shepparton, Victoria.

In 2010, Brother Skehan was convicted on two charges of indecent assault on a student while he was teaching in Broken Hill during the 1970s. The Magistrate found that Brother Skehan through his abuse of trust between the victim and defendant, had left the victim with substantial psychological damage for the rest of his life. Consequently, Brother Skehan was sentenced to 36 months in jail, but his sentence was suspended on condition of observing good behaviour.

In 2013, Brother Skehan was again given an eight-month jail sentence in relation to a separate incident. The jail sentence was suspended also for two years on condition that Brother Skehan observed good behaviour. He was, however, placed on the sex offenders register. The sentence was in relation to the sexual abuse of a 13 year old student at St Colman's in Shepparton, Victoria (now known as Notre Dame College).
