Brother Gerard William Dick

Brother Gerard Dick was born in January 1927. He entered the Christian Brothers as a novice when he was 16 in 1943, approximately. He later became a lay Brother. In 1954, he was sent to the Tardin Farm School in the northern wheatbelt of Western Australia, where he worked as a farm labourer. He spent seven months in Tardin, before moving to Boys’ Town in Bindoon, north-east of Perth. He spent five years at Bindoon working on the farm. In January 1960, Brother Dick went to work at Castledare, which was a junior orphanage run by the Christian Brothers, designed to care for boys between the ages of six and ten. Brother Dick worked at Castledare between January 1960 and early 1968. During this period, Castledare cared for approximately 120 boys. Brother Dick’s main role at Castledare was to drive the orphanage’s truck, and he would also supervise the boys in their sporting activities, in their homework and generally. For a period of time, Brother Dick also supervised one of the two dormitories at Castledare. This was the period during which he committed many offences dealing with physical and sexual abuse against the boys staying there.

In 1995, Brother Dick (then aged 67) was sentenced to three and a half years jail in Perth, Western Australia, after pleading guilty to ten incidents of indecently dealing with boys aged between eight to ten during his time at Castledare in the 60s.
