Brother Damien O’Dempsey

Brother Damien John O’Dempsey was a Christian Brother who spent most of his teaching life in Queensland and New South Wales. He was in particular a teacher and headmaster at various Catholic schools which included the following:

There have been allegations of sexual abuse made against Brother O’Dempsey dating back to 1958. Records provided by The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Sexual Abuse show that there have been allegations made against Brother O’Dempsey at the following schools:

Furthermore, Royal Commission records show that in 1994 Brother O’Dempsey was convicted after giving a "Guilty" plea and was sentenced to 18 months jail (with parole after four months). This was in relation to allegations of sexual abuse that occurred at St Mary’s College in Toowoomba in 1987. Also, in 2006, Brother O’Dempsey gave a "Guilty" plea, with a conviction and 2 year sentence given (with a 12 months non-parole period) with sentence wholly suspended on condition of a 2 year good behaviour bond with supervision of the Adult Probation and Parole Service and with a further condition that he continue treatment. This sentence was in relation to sexual abuse allegations at St Patrick’s College Strathfield in 1981.

In 2001, Brother Damien O'Dempsey was dispensed from the Christian Brothers following various criminal charges brought against him.
