Brian Dennis Cairns (ex-Brother)
Brian Cairns (born 1942) is a former Christian Brother and lay teacher who taught primary students at Catholic schools in Queensland, including:
St Laurence's College, South Brisbane;
St Columban's College, Albion Heights, Brisbane;
Iona College, Lindum, Brisbane; and
St John Vianney Parish Primary School, Manly, Brisbane.
In April 1984 Brian Dennis Cairns was charged with sexual offences against 12 male pupils aged between 10 and 12 years at St Laurence’s and St Columban’s. In 1985 (at age 43), he was convicted of three counts of attempted sodomy, eight counts of gross indecency and 32 counts of indecent treatment. He was sentenced to seven years jail. He served four and a half years in jail.
In 2014, he was sentenced again to five years' imprisonment, to be suspended after nine months, in the District Court in Brisbane after pleading guilty to sexually abusing students aged between eight and 13 when he worked at Iona College and St John Vianney in the 1970s and 1980s.
